What were they trying to resolve:

The client came to us to assist with the removal of their existing solar panel system so they can take it to their new premises as they were moving to a new location. They also wanted the system checked as it had not been generating as much as they would have expected. Kingdom Tea, a speciality tea company based in Taunton, Devon, was relocating their operations but wanted to retain their investment in solar technology.

The commercial solar installation had been an important part of their sustainability efforts, aligning with their organic and environmentally-conscious brand values. Our team was tasked with ensuring this valuable asset could be safely transferred to their new Taunton premises while investigating the underperformance issues that had concerned the company’s management.

What was the solution?

We arranged for scaffolding to be erected and use of a larger wheelbase scissor lift for ease of kit removal. Our electrician started by safely isolating the system and began decommissioning process. On the roof we disconnected strings and lowered the panels in batches to be tested and carefully stored onto oversize pallets ready for storage.

During the removal we uncovered that a whole string of 20+ panels had never been plugged in so this would explain the lower generation. We also removed all the mounting brackets and replaced all the fixing point in the roof sheets with watertight stainless steel roof screws. We removed all the cabling from the roof including cable tray situated down the wall into the building.

What was the result?

After completion there is now minimal evidence of panels ever being on the roof and the roof remains to be sealed and watertight for the new residents. The interior is also completed cleared and circuits removed safely. The entire system has been palletised for ease of transportation with only the cable being disposed of, this is good practise to install new when relocating the system. The restoration work at the original Taunton premises ensured Kingdom Tea could complete their relocation without concerns about the building’s condition for new occupants.

We provided comprehensive documentation for the tea company’s records, including system specifications and performance expectations for when the array is reinstalled. This project demonstrates our ability to support Devon businesses like Kingdom Tea through significant operational changes while helping them maintain their commitment to renewable energy.
