The main types of workplace EV charger

Choosing the right charger setup for your business
The “right” solution depends on how charging will actually be used.
A proper design considers:
Who is charging? staff, visitors, fleet, public
How long are vehicles parked? (dwell time changes the best charger type)
How many bays now, and later? plan expansion from day one
Electrical capacity and distribution (what your supply can support)
Load management (avoid overloading and keep charging fair/reliable)
Payment / access control (if you need permissions, RFID, app access, etc.)
Groundworks (ducting, trenching, bollards, signage)
DNO approval and electrical capacity
Some workplace installs require DNO notification or approval depending on:
total site load and charger count
whether you’re adding higher power chargers
export capability (less common for EV chargers, more relevant when paired with solar/batteries)
supply constraints

Grants available now
Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is the main UK grant supporting workplace charger installs. It’s a voucher-based scheme that helps eligible organisations with the upfront purchase and installation costs.
Key points to know:
It’s available across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Installers must be OZEV-authorised to claim the grant on the customer’s behalf.
The scheme has been extended until 31 March 2027 and grant rates change for installs completed from 1 April 2026.
Grant rate change (important):
From 1 April 2026, the maximum grant rate increases to £500 per socket for installations completed from that date.
Practical tip: even if you’re not ready to install 20–40 bays now, design the infrastructure so you can scale without starting from scratch later.
There is a separate scheme for state-funded education institutions with a different grant structure, including up to £2,500 per socket (with overall limits).
Note on landlord schemes
Some landlord-specific EV chargepoint grants have different timelines (including closures for commercial landlord routes). If your charging project is linked to landlord arrangements, it’s worth checking the latest position.

What the installation process looks like
Site survey and design
