MCS is not the same as being a good salesperson or having a professional-looking website. It is an independently assessed mark that requires ongoing compliance. What MCS stands for and what it covers

MCS stands for Microgeneration Certification Scheme. It is the UK’s quality framework for small-scale renewable energy installations and the products used in them.

The scheme covers solar photovoltaic panels, battery storage systems, air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, wind turbines, and other small-scale generation technologies. For most homeowners and businesses in Devon, the relevant certifications are solar PV, battery storage, and heat pumps.

MCS is not a government body. It operates as an independent not-for-profit organisation and is approved by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero as the standard required for access to government grant schemes and incentive payments. The MCS website at mcscertified.com publishes the register of certified installers and certified products, which is publicly searchable.

Why MCS certification matters to you as a customer

The practical reason most customers care about MCS is financial. Without it, the following are unavailable to you:

The Smart Export Guarantee

The SEG pays you for surplus electricity your solar panels export to the grid. It is the ongoing income stream that improves the financial return from a solar installation for the life of the system. SEG eligibility requires that the installation was carried out by an MCS-certified installer and that the system holds an MCS certificate. An installation completed by a non-MCS installer does not qualify, regardless of how well the physical work was done.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The BUS provides a grant of £7,500 towards an air source heat pump installation. The grant voucher is applied by the installer at the point of sale. An MCS-certified installer is a requirement. If your installer is not MCS-certified, the grant cannot be claimed.

Funded installations through Devon’s local councils for eligible households are only carried out by MCS-certified installers. If you are applying for a funded installation, the installer will be MCS-certified as a condition of the scheme.

Your installation warranty

Many product manufacturers tie their extended warranties to MCS-certified installations. A solar panel manufacturer warranting a panel to 25 years may require that the installation was MCS-certified for that warranty to be valid.

Beyond the financial reasons, MCS accreditation is a meaningful quality signal. It requires the installer to demonstrate competency in system design, product selection, installation, and commissioning, and to be audited on these regularly. It is not a one-time test.

What MCS certification actually requires of an installer

MCS accreditation is not straightforward to obtain and it is not automatic. An installer applying for MCS certification must meet a defined set of requirements covering several areas.

Competency

The installer must demonstrate that the people carrying out installations hold the appropriate qualifications for the technology they are installing. For solar PV, this includes relevant electrical qualifications and solar-specific training. For heat pumps, it includes refrigeration and heat pump-specific certifications. Qualifications are checked at the point of certification and must be maintained.

Quality management system

The installer must have documented procedures covering how surveys are carried out, how systems are designed, how installations are managed, how commissioning is completed, and how complaints are handled. These procedures are reviewed by the MCS auditors.

Insurance

The installer must hold appropriate public liability insurance and professional indemnity cover. The levels required are defined by MCS and confirmed at audit.

Audit

MCS-certified installers are subject to audit by an approved certification body. The audit checks that the installer continues to meet the scheme’s requirements in practice, not just on paper. Installations are reviewed, documentation is checked, and customer-facing processes are assessed. Installers who do not pass an audit can have their certification suspended or withdrawn.

Consumer code compliance

Most MCS-certified installers are also registered with a consumer code such as RECC, the Renewable Energy Consumer Code. Consumer codes provide additional protections for customers including pre-contract information standards, a requirement for fair contract terms, and access to an independent complaints resolution process.

The difference between MCS, NICEIC, and RECC

These three accreditations appear frequently on solar and renewable energy installer websites, sometimes interchangeably. They are different things.

MCS covers the design, specification, and installation of renewable energy systems specifically, solar panels, batteries, heat pumps. It focuses on the technology and the quality of the renewable energy installation.

NICEIC is the leading electrical safety certification body in the UK. It covers the competence of the electricians and electrical installation work carried out on a property. An NICEIC-approved installer is assessed and audited for the standard of electrical work, including wiring, consumer units, and all associated electrical installation. For solar PV and battery storage, the electrical installation is a significant part of the overall project. An installer who holds both MCS and NICEIC accreditation has met two separate sets of independently audited standards covering both the solar system specifically and the electrical installation more broadly.

RECC, the Renewable Energy Consumer Code, is a consumer protection code rather than a technical standard. It sets requirements around how installers communicate with customers, present quotations, and handle complaints. RECC registration means the installer has agreed to specific consumer protection standards and that customers have access to an independent dispute resolution service if something goes wrong.

How to check whether an installer is MCS-certified

The MCS installer register is publicly accessible at mcscertified.com/find-an-installer. You can search by postcode and technology type. The result shows the installer’s name, the technologies they are certified for, and whether their certification is currently active.

This check takes under a minute and is worth doing for every installer who provides you with a quote. The presence of an MCS logo on a website or brochure does not confirm that certification is current. The register does.

When requesting quotes, you can also ask the installer to provide their MCS certificate number. An MCS-certified installer will have this readily available and will be happy to provide it. Reluctance to provide a certificate number is a signal worth noting.

What an MCS-certified installation produces

At the end of an MCS-certified installation, the installer registers the system on the MCS database and issues an MCS certificate for the installation. This document includes the system specification, the date of installation, the installer’s MCS number, and the address of the property.

The MCS certificate is the document that enables you to register for the Smart Export Guarantee. It is also the document that confirms the installation qualifies for grant funding where relevant, and that may be required for product warranty claims. It should be kept in a safe place, as it will be needed for the life of the system.

MCS and the 2025 scheme redevelopment

MCS went through a significant redevelopment of its installer scheme in 2025. The changes strengthened the technical requirements for installers, updated the competency framework to reflect the current range of technologies and system types, and introduced revised audit procedures.

The purpose of the redevelopment was to raise the bar for installer quality and consumer protection as the renewable energy market has grown. For customers, the practical effect is that MCS certification is a more rigorous standard in 2026 than it was several years ago. An installer who has maintained MCS accreditation through the redevelopment process has met the updated requirements.

MCS certification means the installer has met defined standards for competency, processes, and quality management, and has been audited on these. It is a meaningful quality indicator and the best independent check available to customers before commissioning an installation. It does not make it impossible for an installation to have a problem, but it does mean that the installer operates within a framework of standards and has access to audit and complaint resolution processes if something goes wrong.

No. SEG eligibility requires an MCS-certified installation. If your existing installation was carried out before MCS certification was established, or by a non-certified installer, you cannot access the SEG through the main route. There is a legacy route for some older systems, but it does not apply to recent installations by non-certified companies.

The MCS certificate for your installation remains valid regardless of what happens to the installer. Your SEG registration, warranty claims, and grant compliance are tied to the certificate and the system, not to the ongoing trading status of the installer. The installer’s consumer code registration may provide additional protection in cases where the installer ceases trading during or shortly after an installation.

Yes. MCS is a UK-wide scheme and operates the same standards in England, Scotland, and Wales. The government grant schemes that require MCS certification, including the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the Smart Export Guarantee, apply across Great Britain.
