Location Newton Abbot, Devon

The challenge

This Newton Abbot homeowner wanted to get as much solar generation as possible from two roof faces of different sizes, one of which is partly shaded by a dormer. The array also needed to stand up well to the wind.

Services provided

  • Technical survey
  • Online monitoring system
  • Renusol & Genius Flashing mounting system
  • DC electrical connections
  • AC electrical connections
  • Full design and DNO consultation
  • NICEIC certification
  • EV charge point
  • Solarskirt bird protection
  • Scaffolding
  • Tigo optimisers

Our solution

To make the most of the space on each roof, we used a split of Aiko panels: 510W panels on the rear roof and 475W panels on the front. Matching the panel size to each roof face gave the best balance between the space available and the total output.

The panels were mounted using the Renusol system with Genius Flashing, fixed with 66 anchor points for added wind protection. Solarskirt bird protection around the array keeps birds out from underneath the panels and gives further protection against the wind.

To deal with the shading from the dormer, we fitted Tigo optimisers, so a shaded panel doesn’t drag down the output of the rest of the array. We also installed an EV charge point and, as always, handled everything in-house, from the technical survey, full design and DNO consultation through to scaffolding, the DC and AC electrical connections, online monitoring and NICEIC certification.

The result

The homeowner now has a high-output, all-black solar system that makes the most of both roof faces, copes with the dormer shading and is built to stand up to the weather, with estimated annual bill savings of £1,042.
