About the Project
LWC Drinks is the UK’s largest independent wholesaler of beers, wines, spirits, and soft drinks. With 17 depots across the country, a fleet of over 200 specialist delivery vehicles, and more than 17,000 deliveries made every week, LWC serves thousands of hospitality venues across the UK. Their Redruth depot is one of the primary distribution hubs for Cornwall and the wider South West.
LWC’s operations depend on well-maintained, properly specified infrastructure at every one of their sites. Electrical systems that are reliable, energy efficient, and compliant underpin the safe and effective running of their distribution and storage operations.
What They Needed
LWC Drinks required a comprehensive electrical upgrade at their Redruth depot to support a new storage shed and bring the site’s electrical infrastructure in line with current standards. The project had two distinct phases: installing a complete new electrical and LED lighting scheme within the new storage shed, and upgrading the main incoming electrical supply to the existing building including all associated switchgear.
As part of the same programme, LWC wanted the lighting throughout the rest of the existing building upgraded to new LED fittings, replacing the older lighting scheme with a more energy-efficient, better-quality solution that would suit the operational demands of a busy distribution depot.
Services Provided:
New LED lighting scheme design and installation throughout new storage shed
Full electrical installation within new storage shed building
Upgrade of main incoming electrical supply to the existing building
Replacement of existing switchgear with new compliant switchgear
LED lighting upgrade throughout the existing depot building
Cable containment and distribution throughout both buildings
Testing and commissioning of all new electrical installations
NICEIC certification and full handover documentation
What was the solution?
M&E Contrax approached this project as two coordinated workstreams running alongside the construction programme for the new storage shed. Working with the site team, our engineers planned the storage shed electrical installation to be delivered in sequence with the building programme so the shed could be brought into operation without delay on completion.
The new storage shed received a full LED lighting scheme designed for the operational environment of a drinks distribution facility. LED fittings were selected for their energy efficiency, longevity, and light output appropriate to a large storage and pick environment where good visibility is a practical operational requirement as well as a safety consideration.
The main supply upgrade to the existing building required careful planning around the depot’s operational hours, as any interruption to the incoming supply would affect the wider site. Our team coordinated the switchover with LWC’s site management to minimise any downtime, and the new switchgear was specified and installed to provide a compliant and future-ready supply arrangement.
The LED upgrade throughout the rest of the existing building was carried out in sections to allow normal depot operations to continue during the works. The new LED fittings replaced the older installation across the full building footprint.
What was the result?
LWC Drinks’ Redruth depot completed the project in March 2024 with a new storage shed fully operational from day one of handover, a modernised main electrical supply and switchgear installation, and LED lighting throughout both the new shed and the existing depot building.
The LED upgrade across the full site delivers improved light quality for LWC’s picking and distribution operations, with the energy efficiency benefit of LED over the older fitting types reducing the site’s ongoing electricity consumption for lighting. The main supply upgrade provides a compliant, properly rated incoming supply that supports the depot’s current operational requirements and provides headroom for future expansion.
