Solar PV, Battery & EV Charger on a Cedar Shingle Roof in Torquay

Client Private homeowner
Industry Residential
Location Torquay, Devon
Completed July 2025

The challenge

This Torquay homeowner already had a 4kW solar PV system on a flat roof and wanted to take it further, with more solar generation, battery storage and an EV charger, all working together as one system.

The main roof was the tricky part. It is covered in cedar wooden shingles, which need a very different approach to a standard tiled or slate roof if the new panels are to be fixed securely without compromising the roof.

Services provided

  • Technical survey
  • Online monitoring system
  • Renusol & Genius Flashing mounting system
  • DC electrical connections
  • AC electrical connections
  • Full design and DNO consultation
  • NICEIC certification
  • EV charge point
  • Decommissioning of the old system
  • Scaffolding

Our solution

We mounted the new array on the cedar shingles using the Renusol mounting system with Genius Flashing, specialist flashing that keeps the roof watertight around every fixing.

Rather than leaving the original 4kW flat roof system working on its own, we incorporated it into the new inverter and battery system, decommissioning the old equipment it no longer needed. We also installed an EV charge point, so the car can be charged from the same system.

As always, we handled everything in-house, from the technical survey, full system design and DNO consultation through to scaffolding, the DC and AC electrical connections and NICEIC certification.

The result

The homeowner now has one integrated system: the new and existing panels feed a single inverter and battery, the EV charger runs from the same setup, and online monitoring shows exactly how much energy is being generated, stored and used.
