Driving a Greener Future: Make it Net Zero Torbay
In a world where climate change is a growing concern, local support and action is more important than ever. In November 2022, just before COP27, the UK became a partner and signatory of the Net Zero Government Initiative. Led by the United States company SWMAS, this initiative requires participants to create and share a detailed roadmap outlining their plans to achieve net zero government emissions by 2050.
The 2008 Climate Act committed the UK to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 compared to 1990 levels, formed the Committee on Climate Change, and established UK carbon budgets. In June 2019, this was strengthened, committing the UK to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. This is referred to as the UK net zero target.
The local ‘Make it Net Zero Torbay’ scheme is an ambitious initiative designed to support businesses, organisations, and households in Torbay and the surrounding area, on their journey to becoming net-zero. This innovative program is helping reduce carbon emissions while contributing to a more sustainable future for the region. It is the UK government’s ambition for all UK emissions to reach net zero by 2050.
What is the Make it Net Zero Torbay Scheme?
The Make it Net Zero Torbay scheme is an initiative led by the Torbay Climate Partnership in collaboration with local authorities and environmental experts. The goal is simple yet transformative: to help Torbay reach net-zero carbon emissions by providing practical resources, advice, and support to the community. By guiding businesses and households through the process of measuring, reducing, and offsetting their carbon footprints, this scheme is laying the groundwork for a cleaner, greener future.
Whether it’s improving energy efficiency, reducing waste, or investing in renewable energy solutions, the program offers tailored solutions to help local enterprises and individuals take meaningful steps toward sustainability.
Thanks to the ‘Make It Net Zero Torbay’ scheme, businesses in Torbay can apply for a grant of up to £3,000 to help with reducing carbon emissions and saving money on energy bills, this will be available until the end of March 2025. This programme is delivered by manufacturing and business development company SWMAS.
There are grants of up to £3,000 for:
| LED lighting and lighting controls. | Heat Recovery Systems |
| Smart energy monitoring system. | Solar panel installations, wind turbines, heat pumps. |
| Heating/Cooling controls. | Electric vehicle charging infrastructure. For example, charging points, batteries. |
| Specialist energy efficient equipment. For example, manufacturing tools. | Supplying more energy efficient equipment. For example, refrigeration. |
| Boilers/heating plant/equipment/batteries for power generation. |
Participating businesses will benefit from a bespoke package of support to help them assess their current carbon impact, identify bespoke actions to reduce their impacts and hopefully save money. A decarbonisation plan for making it all happen will also be produced, making it as easy as possible for businesses to deliver.
How The ‘Make It Zero Torbay’ Scheme Supports Local Businesses
For many businesses, understanding and reducing carbon emissions can seem like a daunting task. The Make it Net Zero Torbay scheme simplifies this process by offering expert advice, training, and resources to help businesses become more eco-friendly. Through a structured approach, organisations can:
- Measure their Carbon Footprint – Businesses are guided on how to assess their current emissions and identify key areas for improvement.
- Develop a Net Zero Plan – The scheme provides clear, step-by-step plans tailored to each business’s needs, helping them reduce emissions and adopt sustainable practices.
- Access Funding and Grants – Financial support is available for businesses investing in renewable technologies, energy efficiency measures, or carbon reduction strategies.
- Promote Green Credentials – By joining the scheme, businesses can enhance their reputation by showcasing their commitment to sustainability, appealing to eco-conscious customers.
The Importance of Community Involvement
While the scheme focuses on businesses, it recognises that achieving net-zero requires a collective effort. Local households and community organisations are encouraged to participate by reducing energy consumption, adopting low-carbon lifestyles, and supporting green initiatives. The scheme encourages a sense of community engagement, showing that everyone has a role to play in combating climate change.

Local Support for a Greener Future
The Make it Net Zero Torbay scheme isn’t just about reducing carbon emissions – it also creates tangible benefits for the local economy and environment. By embracing sustainable practices, businesses can reduce operating costs, improve energy efficiency, and future-proof their operations. Furthermore, a net-zero Torbay will experience improved air quality, healthier communities, and a boost to the local green economy, attracting eco-friendly investors and customers.
By leading the way in sustainable innovation, Torbay is setting an inspiring example for other regions to follow. Together, businesses, organisations, and residents can make a real difference and ensure a healthier planet for future generations.
So far, SWMAS’ net zero specialists have helped over 300 businesses to reflect their comprehensive plans and reduce their carbon footprint, from the data shared this identifies that around 22,000 tonnes of carbon has been saved which is the equivalent of 12222 flights from London to New York, or travelling around the world 3298 times in a diesel car.
The Make it Net Zero Torbay scheme demonstrates that achieving net-zero is not only possible but also beneficial for businesses and communities alike. By taking part in this initiative, you’re contributing to a brighter, greener future, one step at a time.
