In June 2019, this was strengthened, committing the UK to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. This is referred to as the UK net zero target. 

The local ‘Make it Net Zero Torbay’ scheme is an ambitious initiative designed to support businesses, organisations, and households in Torbay and the surrounding area, on their journey to becoming net-zero. This innovative program is helping reduce carbon emissions  while contributing to a more sustainable future for the region. It is the UK government’s ambition for all UK emissions to reach net zero by 2050. 

What is the Make it Net Zero Torbay Scheme?

The Make it Net Zero Torbay scheme is an initiative led by the Torbay Climate Partnership in collaboration with local authorities and environmental experts. The goal is simple yet transformative: to help Torbay reach net-zero carbon emissions by providing practical resources, advice, and support to the community. By guiding businesses and households through the process of measuring, reducing, and offsetting their carbon footprints, this scheme is laying the groundwork for a cleaner, greener future.

Whether it’s improving energy efficiency, reducing waste, or investing in renewable energy solutions, the program offers tailored solutions to help local enterprises and individuals take meaningful steps toward sustainability.

Thanks to the ‘Make It Net Zero Torbay’ scheme, businesses in Torbay can apply for a grant of up to £3,000 to help with reducing carbon emissions and saving money on energy bills, this will be available until the end of March 2025. This programme is delivered by manufacturing and business development company SWMAS.

There are grants of up to £3,000 for:

LED lighting and lighting controls.	Heat Recovery Systems
Smart energy monitoring system.	Solar panel installations, wind turbines, heat pumps.
Heating/Cooling controls.	Electric vehicle charging infrastructure. For example, charging points, batteries.
Specialist energy efficient equipment. For example, manufacturing tools.	Supplying more energy efficient equipment. For example, refrigeration.
Boilers/heating plant/equipment/batteries for power generation.

Participating businesses will benefit from a bespoke package of support to help them assess their current carbon impact, identify bespoke actions to reduce their impacts and hopefully save money. A decarbonisation plan for making it all happen will also be produced, making it as easy as possible for businesses to deliver.

So far, SWMAS’ net zero specialists have helped over 300 businesses to reflect their comprehensive plans and reduce their carbon footprint, from the data shared this identifies that around 22,000 tonnes of carbon has been saved which is the equivalent of 12222 flights from London to New York, or travelling around the world 3298 times in a diesel car.
