1. Burning Smells

If you’re prone to smelling any sort of burning, then this is a major red flag. This is because of the malfunctioning electrical connections creating this smell, often caused by worn-out wiring or loose wires which rub against each other to create friction. This is from sparking throughout the house, causing the circuit to heat up and melt the part of the wire that is touching each other.  

2. Discoloured Plugs and Sockets

The transformation of colours upon switches and power plugs is usually due to the heat that is generated by faulty wiring or excessive power loads. This can sometimes be caused by burning too, as mentioned in step number one, as this can also cause the changing colour of the plugs and sockets too.

3. Flickering Lights

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), “homes wired with aluminium wire which were manufactured before 1972 with the ‘old technology’ aluminium wire are 55 times more likely to have one or more connections reach “Fire Hazard Conditions” than a home wired with copper.”

These fire hazard conditions are anything that could cause a fire, such as faulty electronics, or poorly stored combustible materials.

 7. Blown Fuses or Tripping Circuit Breakers

Originally designed as a safety measure to prevent electrical fires, circuit breakers will cut off any type of electrical flow when a circuit is no longer able to handle the number of amps (this is the measurement of volume of electricity flowing through wires, varying between 30 amps in old homes and 400 amps in a large home with large-scale electric heating systems).

Consequently, fuses will blow or trip circuits when the electrical systems can no longer handle the amount of electricity flowing through.  

Fuses and circuits can also happen when appliances become too hot, leading to further trips and blows.
