For most Devon homeowners with solar panels, solar battery storage is worth considering in 2026.
The honest answer depends on how you use electricity, what you pay for it, and whether you are thinking about adding an EV charger or heat pump. This guide works through the numbers so you can make a clear decision for your property.
I am Lee Bullingham, Solar PV Installation Lead at M&E Contrax Renewables. We install solar panels and battery storage across Devon and the South West, and we have real data from Devon installations to work with rather than national averages.
Higher self-consumption
A well-sized battery can often increase solar self-consumption from around 30 to 40% up to 70 to 80%.
VAT on battery installs
Domestic battery storage installations currently qualify for 0% VAT when supplied and installed.
Stronger with EVs and heat pumps
The financial case improves if you have an EV charger, heat pump, time-of-use tariff or rural power cut concerns.
What does battery storage actually do?
Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours. Your home uses what it can immediately. Surplus generation that your home does not consume right away either goes to the battery or exports to the grid at the Smart Export Guarantee rate.
Without a battery, most Devon households self-consume around 30 to 40% of what their solar panels generate. The other 60 to 70% exports to the grid, usually at a lower rate than the price you pay to import electricity later in the day.
A battery closes that gap. Surplus generation during the day charges the battery. The battery then powers your home in the evening instead of drawing from the grid. The electricity you use from the battery is worth the rate you would otherwise pay for grid electricity, rather than the lower amount you may receive for exporting it.
For most Devon properties, adding a battery moves self-consumption from around 30 to 40% up to 70 to 80%.
The financial case in Devon in 2026
At current electricity prices of 26.11p per kWh on a standard variable tariff, and a Smart Export Guarantee export rate of around 8p per kWh from many major suppliers, every unit stored in a battery and used at home is worth roughly 18p more than the alternative of exporting it.
For a typical Devon 3-bedroom home with a 4kWp solar system, self-consumption without a battery is around 1,400 kWh per year. With a 10kWh battery, self-consumption rises to around 2,600 to 3,000 kWh per year. The difference is 1,200 to 1,600 kWh per year of electricity that moves from the export column to the self-consumption column.
At 18p per unit of value added, 1,400 kWh of additional self-consumption is worth around £252 per year in direct bill savings over what you would otherwise earn from export. On a battery cost of around £4,000 to £6,000 for a quality 10kWh system installed with 0% VAT, that gives a payback period of roughly 15 to 24 years on the battery alone.
That is an honest figure. Battery storage payback is longer than solar panel payback. The financial case for battery storage gets significantly stronger when you factor in an EV charger or a heat pump, or when you move to a time-of-use electricity tariff.
When does battery storage make a stronger financial case?
Battery storage is not just about the battery itself. It becomes more valuable when your property has higher electricity demand at the right times, or when you can use tariffs and controls to shift electricity use more intelligently.
EV charger
If you have or plan to have an electric vehicle, your evening electricity demand can rise significantly. EV charging draws more power than most household activities, so using stored solar generation rather than grid electricity can improve the battery payback calculation.
Heat pump
An air source heat pump can add 2,000 to 5,000 kWh of annual electricity demand for heating and hot water. A battery can help deliver stored solar generation to the heat pump during morning and evening cycles, reducing running costs.
Time-of-use tariff
Some tariffs offer cheaper overnight electricity. With a battery, you can charge from the grid overnight at a lower rate and use that stored electricity during peak evening hours, independently of solar generation.
Rural Devon properties
Many rural Devon properties experience occasional power cuts, particularly in winter storms. A battery system configured for backup power can provide electricity to selected circuits during a grid outage.
Which battery should you choose?
We install four main battery systems across Devon. The right choice depends on the size of your solar system, your consumption profile, and whether you want backup power capability.
Tesla Powerwall 3
The most capable domestic battery available in the UK market. It offers integrated inverter technology, excellent monitoring through the Tesla app, and strong backup power capability during a grid outage. It is a good choice for properties wanting a more complete energy independence setup.
Fox Energy Storage
Competitively priced, well specified, and available in a range of capacities. Fox is a popular choice for Devon properties where capacity flexibility is important and backup power is not the main priority.
SolarEdge Home Battery
Best suited to solar systems already using SolarEdge optimisers, where the inverter and battery integrate natively. If you have an existing SolarEdge system, this is often the most seamless retrofit option.
Pylontech
A modular lithium iron phosphate battery option. It is scalable, which means you can add capacity later. This can suit larger properties or homeowners who are unsure how much storage they may want in future.
Can you add battery storage to existing solar panels in Devon?
Yes. If you already have solar panels and want to add a battery, AC coupling is the standard approach. A battery with its own inverter connects to the AC side of your existing solar installation without replacing your current inverter.
This works with many existing solar systems and carries the same 0% VAT as new solar and battery installations. We assess compatibility with your existing system at the survey stage.
The main considerations are the inverter type, the available space for the battery unit, and the electrical supply capacity at your consumer unit.

Frequently asked questions
Is solar battery storage worth it in Devon?
For most Devon homeowners with solar panels, battery storage improves the financial return and significantly improves energy independence. The payback period on the battery alone is typically 15 to 24 years at current prices. The case strengthens considerably if you have or plan to add an EV charger or heat pump, or move to a time-of-use tariff.
How much does home battery storage cost in Devon?
For a quality 10kWh system installed with 0% VAT, expect to pay from around £4,000 to £6,000 depending on the brand and installation complexity. Tesla Powerwall 3 costs more than Fox or Pylontech for equivalent capacity. All domestic battery storage installations currently attract 0% VAT.
Can I add battery storage to my existing solar panels?
Yes. We retrofit battery storage to existing solar systems across Devon using AC coupling, which works with many existing inverters without replacing your current setup. We assess compatibility at the survey stage.
How long does a solar battery last?
A quality lithium iron phosphate battery is typically warranted to retain 80% of its original capacity after 4,000 to 6,000 full charge and discharge cycles, which is around 11 to 16 years at one cycle per day. The battery continues to work beyond that point at reduced capacity.
Does battery storage qualify for the 0% VAT rate?
Yes. Battery storage installed alongside solar panels, or as a standalone addition to an existing solar system, qualifies for 0% VAT on supply and installation. This relief is confirmed until at least March 2027. On a £5,000 battery installation, this saves £1,000 compared with the standard 20% rate.
